What is "Hokulea"?
You may have wondered, "What does 'Hokulea' mean?"
Good question!
In Hawaiian, the name "Hokulea" (ho-koo-LAY-ah) is translated "Happy Star and it refers to the star Arcturus. It is one of the stars the ancient Hawaiian navigators used as they were out in the ocean. That star passed directly over Hawaii's latitude. This helped in guiding these early navigators to the island chain.
Hokulea is also the name of the double hulled sailing vessel, which is still in use today to navigate across the ocean without the use of modern technology, using the methods the ancient Hawaiians used, passed on from generation to generation.
